Director Toby
Hulse says:
“Around the
World in Eighty Days is a novel about
the power of human invention and persistence
to make the impossible happen. When faced
with seemingly insurmountable problems
in his journey, Mr Phileas Fogg is always
able to find a solution through logic
and clear thought. This is what makes
the book so suitable for a Great Reading
Adventure in a city celebrating the birth
of Brunel, a real life inventor and thinker
who was able to overcome what seemed at
the time impossible.
In adapting for the stage I have tried
to find the theatrical equivalent of this
idea - and so Around the World in Eighty
Days, a story that crosses four continents
by every conceivable means of transport
meeting hundreds of characters along the
way, is told using only three actors and
a lot of suitcases. The results are hilarious,
and totally in the spirit of Jules Verne's
novel, as the gallant cast race against
time to complete the story using the combined
power of their invention and our imagination.
Add to this a beautifully quirky set,
costume design filled with eccentric detail
and odd machinery by Vicky Andrews of
puppet company Pickled Image and you have
the ingredients for a great piece of theatre.”
Playdays:
Watch out for Playday events for Around
the World in Eighty Days. These special
events are for all the family. The performance
is just the tip of the iceberg with Playdays
allowing the audience to see a little bit
more of the huge amount of hard work, skill
and imagination that go into every production,
much of which is never seen. Using demonstrations
discussion and participation looking at
everything from set, props and costume to
the characters, story and script, Playdays
take you behind the scenes with input from
cast and crew alike.
