1839 Sister Mathilde born Start of the first Opium War between Britain and China, and the first Afghan War.
1842 Sister Marie born. Cession of Hong Kong to Britain (Treaty of Nanking).
1847 Begins law studies. Republic of Liberia formed.
1848 First visits to literary salons in Paris. Revolutionary uprisings across Europe.
1849 Passes law degree. Death of Marc Brunel.

1898 Brother Paul dies. Zola’s defense of Dreyfus published.
1900 Sight weakens. Moves to smaller house. Boxer Rebellion rising in Peking.
1905 Seriously ill with diabetes. Dies 24 March. Bloody Sunday massacre at St Petersburg.
